Jose Manuel Gonzalez has established himself as one of the fiercest critics of Venezuela’s weak political system. The agricultural entrepreneur has also been vouching for the revival of the country’s agricultural sector, which he says is on the brink of collapse. What motivates him is the fact that he is a farmer himself and therefore, has first-hand experience about the perennial suffering that small scale farmers have been forced to endure. Mr. Jose Manuel Gonzalez is also a politician representing Guárico state in the national assembly as a deputy.
Why Venezuela’s Agricultural Sector is Facing Imminent Collapse
According to Gonzalez, successive governments have totally failed to address the plight of farmers in the South American nation. Most farmers live below the poverty line despite the the country being richly endowed with agricultural resources. The government has not fulfilled its promise of subsidizing agricultural input.
Despite numerous pleas to the government, little has been done. This state of inaction is relegating more farmers into poverty. Venezuela’s legislature has similarly failed to address the issue due to in-fighting and supremacy battles. There has generally been lack of consensus about the inherent problems that farmers across the country face. The coalition government is weak and has failed to act decisively on the issue. The weak political system explains why terror gangs are having a field day in the villages. The little earnings that farmers are receiving end up in the hands of kidnappers. Gonzalez points that the government must act immediately to bring such acts to an end.
